To avoid grammar snafus while writing for or on an online portal there are some basic capitalization rules you have to keep in mind. When your brain is churning out fresh content with a great flow and you do not wish to stop.
Your mind is dictating and your fingers are running on the keyboard like playing a melody and suddenly then a snag drops and stands in the way. You are now left confused. Is it Email or eMail, or the Iphone of iPhone.
You got confused and making a mistake is no option. So you Google it find the right answer, type it in your piece, and just like that, you have lost your flow. This can be prevented from happening just by learning these 4 simple rules.
You will be saved with a lot of time, effort, and the flow of creativity. Just keep these rules with you whenever you write and shoot your fingers on the keyboard.
1. Do not capitalize a word that has fallen into regular usage.
For explanation, let’s take the word scuba. Self-Contained Underwater Breathing Apparatus was translated to the acronym SCUBA in 1952.
With time and common usage of the term, it was changed to lower case and today we use it as scuba and not SCUBA. The same goes for the “internet” which is not known as “Internet” anymore.
2. How to use E?
It is Ecommerce, E-commerce, or eCommerce? Can you answer it? Is it Email, E-mail, or email? As per Merriam Webster dictionary, the hyphen is needed. But as per the new styles, the hyphen is being removed.
Grammarly says both the styles are fine and usable. Whatever you choose to go with making sure you choose the same spelling throughout the article.
3. Pluralizing and Capitalizing
When you write for the web, there are so many language issues you will come in contact with.
Will it is a Blog or a blog, you may not know. Abbreviations are the most confusing ones, always remember, you cannot pluralize abbreviations.
For example, when it comes to Search Engine Optimization, it will never be S.E.O’s or SEOs. Yes, the dots are confusing too. It comes naturally to put periods when using acronyms.
Unless these acronyms that become very commonly used as a blog comes at the starting of the sentence, make sure you do not capitalize on it.
4. How to use the brand name with capitalization.
The correct way to do it is to know how the companies and brands use their name and copy the same. Do not go for their website link because that will always be in a small case. Go to the website and look for the registered brand name.
That is how you are supposed to use the name of the brand. You must not put your interpretation on it. Like FedEx is written as FedEx, Linkedin is written as LinkedIn, youtube is written as YouTube. These are the names of the brands you cannot change.
Keeping updated with Grammar rules. While you may be a grammar Nazi and know all the rules of grammar as per the English language, the web language differs. The rules set for web language are a lot different than the basic English language.
Make sure you keep reading on online platforms that are known for providing high-quality content. You will be able to keep up with the grammar then.
